Emergency Services
St. Joseph Hospital was designated and remains Southern New Hampshire's first Level II Trauma Center. The highly trained, dedicated and diverse emergency department staff provides for all aspects of emergency care. Emergency department physicians are certified in Emergency Medicine. Staff members are trained and certified in such areas as emergency and trauma nursing, and Sexual Assault Examiners. Pre-hospital emergency medical service providers and the emergency staff offer a synergistic approach to current treatments for stroke patients. Pre-hospital providers can activate the Stroke Response Team while enroute with a stroke patient, thus reducing door to thrombolytic drug treatment times.
Medical Director James Martin, MD, FACEP, in conjunction with Donna Infante, RN, BSN, Emergency Department Nursing Director, provide guidance and leadership for this 14-bed emergency department.
Patient Services Provided
After treatment and stabilization of the trauma patient in the emergency department, the patient will be admitted on an emergency basis to the operating room or the Intensive Care Unit, admitted to the appropriate Medical-Surgical floor within St. Joseph Hospital for continued care, or sent home if the patient is well enough. If necessary, patients needing very specific and specialized care, or complex procedures not available at a local hospital, will be transferred to another facility by ambulance or helicopter as needed. When medically stable, patients requiring acute rehabilitative services may have continuity of care by being admitted to our Rehabilitation Unit, where they will have access to specialists in physical, occupational, and speech therapy, as well as the latest technology in rehabilitative care.
Family Services Provided
Families and loved ones are treated with care and compassion as they await information about their loved one. Spiritual care providers are available to stay with families to answer any questions and to ensure that updated information about the patient’s condition is provided. A private waiting room is available for families and loved ones waiting to visit a critically injured trauma patient.
