Aging is a Natural Process…
How do we know if certain symptoms are part of the natural aging process or something more? When questions about the mental well-being of a loved one arise, the staff at the Senior Adult Mental Health Unit (SAMHU) at St. Joseph Hospital can help provide the answers you need. The multi-disciplinary team specializes in Geriatric Psychiatry.
Our mission is to care for the physical, social, emotional and spiritual well-being of our patients and their families. We do this in a warm, comfortable environment that fosters recovery and healing from mental illnesses and/or behavior changes.
As patient care providers, we help patients reach their greatest potential. The program design specializes in care directed toward meeting individual mental health care needs.
Program Overview:
- Admission Process – The average stay is seven to ten days, where complete medical and psychiatric needs are met.
- Therapeutic Modalities – Active participation in therapy is highly recommended. Therapeutic programming consists of a blend of music and expressive therapy, sensory and movement therapy, social relaxation, and memory exercises.
- Spiritual Care Services – Every effort is made to address patients’ spiritual needs. The hospital has a Spiritual Care Department to address multi-denominational concerns or needs. Area clergy are also welcome to visit patients. Holy Communion is offered daily for those who wish to partake.
- Discharge Planning – Our specialized social workers work collaboratively with patients and families to establish a residence that is most appropriate. Discharge planning begins upon admission to the unit.
