Nurse Residency Program

It is the belief of the Department of Professional Development that nurses vary in educational background, experience, and skill level. Therefore, the Nurse Residency Program recognizes the uniqueness of each nurse that enters this program. St. Joseph Hospital nurse educators are committed to providing an individualized orientation and building upon core skills acquired in nursing school.

What You Should Know ...

  • The program runs 8-12 weeks.
  • Evidence of successful completion of the NCLEX exam is required prior to employment.
  • Participants will be assigned a preceptor for clinical experiences.
  • Work primarily 1st and 2nd shift during Residency Program.
  • Participants will be assigned to preceptor.
  • Regular evaluations/mentor discussions with Clinical Educator/Clinical Nurse Leader.
  • Program includes every other weekend commitment.

Goals of the Nurse Residency Program

  • To allow the new graduate RN to gradually assume the duties and responsibilities of the RN role under the direction and guidance of a preceptor.
  • To support the new RN with professional and personal goal setting to maximize the clinical learning experience.
  • To familiarize the new RN with hospital and nursing policies and procedures.
  • To assist the new RN to apply evidenced based knowledge and skills in the clinical area.
  • To offer the new RN both didactic and clinical experiences designed to enhance professional growth.
  • To assist the new RN in the development of time management and priority setting skills.
