Angioplasty

St. Joseph Hospital now provides 24/7 emergency coronary angioplasty services. When a person is actively having a heart attack he/she is now able to receive rapid intervention to minimize or stop heart damage here at St. Joseph Hospital any time of the day or night.

A cholesterol plaque (atherosclerosis) builds up in the wall of an artery to the heart. This plaque can suddenly rupture completely blocking the artery, creating a life-threatening heart attack. At St. Joseph Hospital, we are now equipped to perform 24/7 coronary angioplasty allowing prompt intervention in these emergency situations.

Angioplasty, also called Percutaneous Transluminal Coronary Angioplasty (PTCA) is a procedure where a balloon-tipped catheter is inserted through an artery in the groin or arm to open the blocked coronary artery. This is performed by specially trained Interventional Cardiologists and cardiac catheterization staff. PTCA is now referred to as percutaneous coronary intervention, or PCI, as this term now includes the use of balloons, stents and other life-saving devices. This procedure helps to reestablish blood flow to the heart muscle and minimize damage.
