Edward V. Karg Day Away Program

Caring for someone with dementia is a privilege and a challenge. Sometimes, a day away makes all the difference.

The Edward V. Karg Day Away program offers people with Alzheimer's disease or primary dementia (not caused by a stroke) a day of socialization, mental stimulation, and physical activity while their caregivers take a break from the responsibility of continuous care.

Participants meet once a week for six hours at the Parish Nurse Center for Wellness in Nashua. A trained volunteer staff offers compassionate friendship and supervision in an atmosphere that is made for fun. Activities include:

  • Arts and crafts
  • Music therapy
  • Pet therapy
  • Dancing
  • Bingo
  • Bowling and more!

Because the program offers a safe, loving, and stimulating environment that is socially and not medically based, participants must be mobile and able to engage in activities. All activities are in accordance with research conducted by the Alzheimer's Association.

Alzheimer's disease is often called the "family disease" because of its profound effect on family and loved ones. A day away can help relieve the tension and frustration that sometimes builds in the caregiver/patient relationship. If you and your loved one need respite care, call the Parish Nurse Center for Wellness for more information at (603) 598-2424.
